Blood Red Shoes – Water EP

Following on from last year’s In Time To Voices, The Water EP is clearly a product of its environment, and something of a departure from the (mostly) subdued atmospheric sound of its predecessor.Where their last full length record included something of an ebb and flow, moving between the soft melancholy of  'Two Dead Minutes' and a more harsh-edged, straightforward rock sound, Water is very much in the same vein of the latter.

Solange - True ep

The way they package it fits what they are selling, you’ve got to give the Knowles sisters that. Go on YouTube, check Beyonce’s performance on the Fallon show last year (2011) and compare and contrast that with Solange’s 2012 performance. Even if you put it on mute, you still just have to come away with the same conclusion one would draw if listening to their music via audio: namely that these two women are in entirely different aesthetic fields altogether. Solange’s recent collaborations with Dev HynesOf Montreal and Grizzly Bear would also tell you that much.

Small Engine Repair - An Introduction To Small Engine Repair EP

Small Engine Repair is a band that can’t decide whether to laugh or cry. Every song from their debut EP, An Introduction To Small Engine Repair is shot through with an underlying sense of tragedy but decorated with a flurry of wryness. Take opening cut ‘Fall Down At Your Feet’; a track that speaks of a heart-broken pub landlord who find his wife ‘on her knees with the butcher’.
