New Single From Folk Rock Quintet Night Flight
- Written by Marky Edison
London based band, Night Flight, return with 'God Knows’, the second single from their upcoming EP, Carousel, out July 20 via CRC Records. Opening up with a chugging guitar line, before tastefully navigating its way to a rousing chorus, 'God Knows' finds frontman and songwriter Samuel Holmes crying out “God knows what the hell I’m supposed to do / God knows what I'm trying to prove” - a plea for help, or answers, perhaps.
The five-piece encapsulate sounds from a pleasing variety of eras and genres, with their upcoming second EP offering up a stunning journey centred around topics ranging from the drive of chasing a dream, to personal defiance and resilience in search of closure. Speaking on the new track, Samuel Holmes explained ‘God Knows’ is: "A song centred on the lust and isolation of chasing a dream, with an air of playful flippancy and circumstantial irony attached.” Suggesting a sense of inner turmoil during his songwriting process — his chosen path appears to be wearing him down - “seeing my friendships die” / “I'm waving the flag for those who chose to follow the path of cash and homes”.
Despite the somewhat contemplative nature of Holmes’ lyrics, it's the tracks' uplifting, rousing instrumentals and melodies that really propose an inner belief - a determination to succeed. “A lot of the writing that I do comes from Nick Drake, John Martyn and Jeff Buckley in its initial state,” says Sam. “I take a lot from The Beatles, Big Star, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and bands like that - but all of our tastes are eclectic. There are just as many modern influences ranging from Kurt Vile, Angel Olsen, and War On Drugs, to Kevin Morby and Andy Shauf.”
