Cuddly Shark - Body Mass Index EP
- Written by Kenneth McMurtrie
Young Knives were the initial point of reference that came to mind when first playing these few sharp and energetic new tracks from the Highland trio, Cuddly Shark. Body Mass Index EP is their first release since 2010’s self titled album, and they’ve clearly expanded their musical horizons that little bit further from what was already a widely ranging palette.
Is the title track a neat reversal of the stereotypical rawk approach to women? Maybe, with its protagonist proclaiming that he’s “on the way to ugly” after being rejected in love when topping out at over six feet and “only 14 stone”. Either way it sprints along at a good lick and second track, ‘Overpriced’, is similarly pop-punk in style.
After those two, however, none of the remaining songs come in at anymore than two minutes long so a couple of them disappear like snow off a dyke. ‘Skewiff’, with it’s sound rounded out by a bit of additional piano, is quite sweet though and then things slow right down for closer ‘The Man You Want’, a largely acoustic, romantic ditty.
