Album Review: Let's Wrestle - In The Court Of The Wrestling Let's

  • Written by  Rob Barker

When it comes to indie hallmarks a few things come to mind, and Let’s Wrestle are happy to meet every expectation with their debut album. Subdued guitars? Check. Simple beats for drunken dancing? Check. Out of tune vocals that sound like a drunken live karaoke act? Double Check.

Comprising guitarist / singer Wesley Patrick Gonzales, bassist / singer Mike Lightning and drummer Darkus Bishop, Let’s Wrestle are shamelessly untalented, producing the kind of music that 1,000 chimps with instruments could bang out over a lunch break.

However, while the band might have the skills of a primary school music class, they are also more than capable of producing great, if simple, tracks to bring a smile to your face and get you into that summer mood.

That said, In The Court Of The Wrestling Let’s is far from a great album, with the opening track, ‘My Arms Don’t Bend That Way Damnit’, grating from start to finish thanks to Gonzales’ tone deaf vocal meanderings. Still, the album is not without merit, with ‘I Won’t Lie To You’ mixing effortless indie-punk guitars with hooky vocals and the sort of bassline that will have dance floors packed.

Your chances of enjoying Let’s Wrestle essentially come down to why you want to listen to music. If you’re in the mood for something to contemplate and get your teeth into In The Court Of The Wrestling Let’s really isn’t it, but when it comes to chant-along lyrics and drunken shenanigans it could be the perfect soundtrack.
