Charlie Simpson – Long Road Home

  • Written by  Emma Lawrence

To be honest, when I got Charlie Simpson’s new album through the post, I dreaded listening to it. As a life long Busted fan, I’ve hated him for a very long time, and avoided anything FightStar did like the plague. But I am very pleased to say that Long Road Home has totally changed my opinion.

The album shows just what a talented musician he his, and that he does really have the skills to write good songs. Lead single 'Haunted' has a folk vibe to it, most definitely a song to listen to in the long hazy summer nights Scotland has been getting of late.

Opening track, and the album’s namesake 'Long Road Home' is also a stand out track. It’s a lovely pop song, with a good beat and nice harmonies, a festival sing-a-long song in the making.

Tracks such as 'Winter Hymns', 'Emily' and 'Would You Love Me Any Less?' showcase Charlie’s singing talent and his talent as a musician which are simply beautiful to listen to, with Would You Love Me Any Less hitting a wonderful crescendo!

'Forty Thieves' for me, really is the weakest track but many would struggle to find a track they disliked on this album, it’s not a bad song, it just feels a little boring compared to the rest of Long Road Home.

Overall, this is a strong release from the former rocker, filled with lovely harmonies and tinkling guitars. It’s so far from everything he's done in Busted and FightStar. So, even if like me you aren’t, or, should I say weren’t a Charlie Simpson fan, this album will surely convert you and it is perfect summer listening. Well done Chaz!
