Single Review : Mike Tyler - Money Grows On Your Knees
- Written by Kenneth McMurtrie
'Money Grows On Your Knees' (which you have the chance to win a copy of) is lifted from Mike Tyler's 2012 album Erection. The New York native comes across as a latter day Lou Reed / Jonathan Richman-like character although with statements such as "I believe the sound of popular music is the sound of mutts barking; frictions, and strange conglomerations, mistaken identifications, and odd-ball pairings. Not Yin and Yang but Wham and Bam!”, there's clearly a different level of eccentricity involved.
The A-side here is as sleazily delivered as you'd expect from the title. There's a distinct leer in Tyler's vocals, like that of a 19th century monocle and topper wearing pimp. It's pop of decent quality in the vein that Jona Lewie used to mine, a song with just enough of a tale woven through it for you to make up your own ending. 'Corny Song', the B-side, came about after Tyler played a show in London where decor & the other elements of the venue met the subject matter of Erection head-on to achieve near parody. It's pretty short but upbeat little number.
The packaging of the single is rather special - a green vinyl 7", a cd version and a jigsaw puzzle from The Art Cannot Be Damaged, the publishing interest Tyler is involved with. To win a copy you'll need to tweet @musosguide the answer to the following question - Which words of Mike Tyler’s were sprayed outside Paddington Station by Bansky?. Make sure to include the hashtags #miketylercomp and #musosguide in your tweet.Closing date for the contest is April 21st after which time we'll select a winner and Prescription PR will post out the prize. Needless to say this is not open to anyone writing for us or Unsigned Bands Online.
