Julio Bashmore - Everyone Needs A Theme Tune EP

  • Written by  Richard Seddon

I’ve always said that I’d love a theme tune - imagine a track blaring out as soon as you enter a room, what would it be? I’d love mine to be the theme tune to Indiana Jones but Indiana’s got that one, maybe something like the Benny Hill music would be better – although walking into a job interview would feel a bit awkward.

Anyhoo, Bristol. There’s something in the water - I reckon anything you say in that city is recorded, put through an analogue delay, degraded with each repeat then added to some dub beats even before you’ve finished your sentence. It’s a deal they have with the City Council I think. I’m joking, of course, no such thing could exist, it would cost too much.

Julio Bashmore's Everyone Needs a Theme Tune E.P. isn’t the kind of thing you can listen to while you do something else, it demands your full attention. Without doubt the coolest offering is the last track, ‘The Horn That Time Forgot’, slow, funky and with a lead melody that wouldn’t sound out of place on a De La Soul track, and 80s sounding drum machines keep the whole thing going. ‘Battle for Middle You’, first track is kind of what you’d expect if you put the words dub, Bristol, house and ‘montage of young people getting ready to go out’ into the Sonic Imagitron 3000TM and listened to the results - it’s got a vocal hook, repeated ad infinitum and 808 cowbells and handclaps.

So if you’re on your way out in that fun way some people do, I expect you’ll enjoy listening to this. Mr. Bashmore should get a page on Wikipedia too, all you can tell from his Myspace page is that he likes to sip tea and his kitchen could do with a good tidy.
