Evan Voytas - Tomorrow Night We'll Go Anywhere EP

  • Written by  Rosie Duffield

The opener to Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere starts similarly to the ‘demo’ on keyboards that were around in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s – a clunky drum beat and an almost-melody that sounds like an electric clarinet. Evan Voytas’s vocals drift in as if on their own cloud, but the whole thing still sounds like it was made in a basement twenty years ago. Voytas grew up listening to ‘60s and ‘70s pop music, and the retro feel is certainly evident throughout the EP.  Influences range from T Rex to Daft Punk, and in the first track in particular, this is obvious.

Throughout the record, Voytas constructs songs based on a solid foundation of percussive rhythms; various electronic instruments precariously balanced on top. Soft, floaty vocals juxtapose themselves amongst it all on each track, leaving you dreamily nodding along, getting lost in the music.

Which is no surprise; Voytas did exactly that himself. Basing himself in Pennsylvania, the singer moved into an isolated farmhouse and got to work on his debut EP. Just as he has immersed himself in the music, we do too - each song enchanting is in its own way.

The problem is this: although each track is good, none of them are particularly stand-out. Whilst you can get lost in the music, it’s just as easy to let the music wash past you whilst you’re doing other things. Having the EP on in the background can soon see you on track five, when you thought you were on track one a moment ago.

Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere is good, but not good enough to be memorable.
