Live: DJ Cheeba, Arts Centre, Norwich

  • Written by  Nicko Ruddock

Prior to tonight's gig we were hot with anticipation for the thrilling atmosphere that was sure to ensue but much to our disappointment, walking into the empty room as the music begins does nothing but extinguish this flame. Although a small audience is to be expected for a support act, this is a whole new level where I can literally see no one else in the room bar the performers. Onstage are DJ duo Easily Dunn and Dinch and despite dwelling within a dead atmosphere the music being played is actually rather enjoyable. Their collection of music features a funky vibe that has the entire room moving (just us then ...) and one particular remix of a Jackson 5 song brings on a smile. Alas, It isn't long before the repetitive and relentless bombardment of bass music - combined with a lack of any real performance element – soon become tiresome to listen to.

As soon as DJ Cheeba hits the stage it is clear that this would be something special. At first glance it is simply a series of video clips featuring various pop culture references such as ‘Back To The Future’, ‘Blues Brothers’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ played along to his music. But it doesn't take long to notice that Cheeba is actually manipulating the clips along with the music using his decks in a similar way to a regular DJ manipulating music. This is interesting to witness live after seeing many audio/visual remix videos on youtube and this live encounter has us transfixed to the screen avidly watching the clever manipulation as it unfolds. Not only does the video keep everyone entertained, but Cheeba’s fantastic stylistic performance on its own is enough to convince anyone that a set of decks can be used as an instrument and not just simply to mix two songs together. One particular highlight of his set includes him rapidly scratching the deck like a mad man, making it look more like sports than a musical performance. His live use of filter cut-off and pitch modulation; although a staple in all repetitive music, is refreshing and great to listen to.

Towards the end of Cheeba’s set it is necessary that we leave due to unforeseen circumstances and therefore regrettably missing the entirety of Hexstatic’s set. DJ Cheeba puts on a great show, however, and we will definitely follow his page in anticipation of another nearby gig. Unfortunately, though, we can only imagine how great Hexstatic will be. So with disappointment in our hearts, we turn our back on the music and head towards the door, with hope that soon they will return once more.
