Twin Peaks - Down In Heaven

  • Written by  Zoe Wallbank

Twin Peaks have released their third album Down in Heaven. The album sums them up as a band; older, wiser and stills packs a punch, it will keep the old fans and attract new ones alike. Although this album covers a lot of popular topics: love, heartbreak and friendship, it does so in a more mature and wise beyond its year's approach.

The maturity of the album is shown in their views towards certain subjects. ‘Stain’ is a song about lows of life and how to overcome them, they state: “If you gotta hold onto something, you better hold onto yourself”.

Their songs about heartbreak are less about blaming someone for leaving them and more about sharing experiences. Unrequited love is a common topic amongst songwriters, yet track 2, ‘Wanted You’ has a refreshing new take on it. No one is blamed nor made out to a bad person whereas most song demonises the other for not reciprocating the feeling. It even ends with the lyrics: “I wanted you, but you didn’t want me…Heaven knows I’ll bandage up.” In fact, the closest this album comes to a traditional track is the lead single ‘Holding Rose’, however even this has a sense of novelty as if it knows the risk of being cliché yet is fighting it with lyrics such as: “Save me from this sad, sad song”.

That being said, the album has lighter topics with ‘My Boys’ being an upbeat track about friendship with slightly tongue in cheek vocals. In addition both ‘Keep it Together’ and ‘Getting Better’ touch on heavier subjects: “I see you hiding all your problems at the liquor store”, yet have a strong beat that will get people swaying and clapping along.

Their ability to pair incredibly heartfelt lyrics with more upbeat tracks without compromising in one area for the other is again shown in “You Don’t” a track about being consumed with love. It matches the lyric:s “Every time I sleep I dream about you again” “I don’t wanna be yours, I wanna be bored of you” with a melody that will sure to get people dancing.

Overall, the album is way ahead of a lot of other music that has been released recently. With both emotional and upbeat tracks, they don’t comprise anywhere and that shows. The album is undoubtedly Twin Peaks, from their style, emotion and incredible lyrics to their risk-taking approach to business and refusal to settle for anything but the best.

Down in Heaven is available via Amazon & iTunes.
