Esther Joy Shares New Single 'Friendless Necessity'

Emerging London-based artist Esther Joy is sharing new single ‘Friendless Necessity’ from her new EP. Having written, produced & recorded the entirety of the upcoming record, Pyschic Tears is due out August 11. Look out for our review next week.

In the words of Esther, "‘Friendless Necessity’ is about the emotional remnants left behind from a bad experience in my life. I’ve written it almost like a love song to the trauma - exploring how at times I can feel lost without it, even though it hurts but how at other times it totally suffocates me.  The track is ultimately a plea for freedom - but not fully knowing whether it won’t let go of me or I can’t let go of it.”

Esther Joy doesn't stay in one place for long. Born in Leeds, she grew up in Edinburgh, and has since lived in London, Sheffield, Coventry & is now again in London. Having started making music as a teenager on a computer DJ programme, Esther sees music as a way of expressing the things that caused her much distress in her formative years. ‘Most of my teenage years and early 20s were super dysfunctional and I did a great job of royally fucking up" she explains "The thing that pieced me back together was rediscovering making music. I realised that you could build worlds of sound and textures in a computer without ever having to leave your bedroom (which is kind of mind blowing). From then on I taught myself how to produce and began writing electronic music.”

Whilst also a member of Charli XCX's band, Esther Joy is an artist in her own right. Written, recorded and produced by Esther Joy, new EP Psychic Tears, combines dynamic electronics, hard & heavy synth lines and bewitching lyrics, but somehow retains a certain feeling of weightlessness and ethereal emotion, showcasing a fresh sound that has clicked into place for this London-based artist.

She concludes "I couldn’t express myself musically in the way I wanted to for such a long time, and I just wanted someone to swoop in and make it all easy. Never finding those people was the best thing that could have happened because it forced me to get better on my own and now I am now I am just starting to feel like I am sounding like me."  And as Psychic Tears marks the sound of personal self-discovery for Esther Joy, for the London music scene, it also marks a rising star positioning herself firmly on the horizon.

The Riptide Movement Play Whelan’s

Having blown the Irish music scene wide open in 2014 with their No.1, gold-selling album Getting Through, a string of Top 10 singles and various sold-out headline tours, The Riptide Movement continue their international rise with upcoming European and Worldwide release of their newest album Ghosts amidst a run of upcoming Irish, European & US dates throughout the rest of the year.

Ghosts is a journey that began somewhere between the Caragh River and the Seefin mountains of Gleinbeigh, Co Kerry, and came to completion in Tornillo, Texas, thirty miles East of the Rio Grande, under the guidance of Grammy award winning producer, Ted Hutt. The result is an emotional listen and the perfect bookend for a concept album that opens up conversations that span the generations. There is an authenticity in everything The Riptide Movement do. It permeates their sound and defines their approach.

This charity event will be the very first show the guys have done in Whelan’s in a very long time and we are delighted that they agreed to support such a good cause. All proceeds for the show will go to Child Vision Ireland. Over 150 years old, Child Vision is the only place in Ireland totally dedicated to the education and therapy needs of blind and multi-disabled children. Fellow busker and Ireland’s golden guitar player NC Lawlor will be the support. NC has taking the international blues scene by storm in recent years and this will be a home coming for him.
