Musictown Hits Dublin’s Music Library

As part of The Music Library’s Emerging Artists series, Dublin City Public Libraries and the Musictown Festival present Cult Called Man and The Motives for an afternoon of music, song and chat. Both bands will play a 30 minute set and take part in a Q&A with the audience, with compere Marky Edison (Hey, that’s me!) hosting.

Conceived in a Dublin psychiatric ward in 2012, Cult Called Man have always held an appreciation for the strange side of the human condition. ‘When we play, it's a church. We preach, and people either get on board or get freaked out.' In the wake of 2014's Mr Wednesdae EP recordings, the Cult cloistered themselves within Tyrellstown’s Camelot Studios ,to write and record their debut album, Cult Fiction.

The Motives are an alternative rock band from Wexford that formed in 2001. The members are Geoff Morrison (vocals, guitar), Joe Bernie (drums, vocals), Allan Kinsella (guitar, vocals, harmonica, keyboards) and Dean Redmond (bass, drums) they have been compared to The Divine Comedy, Jonathan Richman, and Talking Heads, difficult to define and get restless slotting into any one genre. The Motives have a singular voice that will appeal to encyclopaedic music nerds and casual listeners equally.

Both acts will then play a set together to close the show, showcasing the festival’s spirit of collaboration. The event will take place in the activity room of the Central Library, ILAC Centre, Henry St, on Saturday April 21 from 2.30 – 4.30 pm

This is an all-ages event. Admission is free and booking is essential.

Zola Jesus’ B-Sides & Remixes Album

Singer, songwriter, and record producer Zola Jesus has announced a new album of previously unheard tracks and remixes titled Okovi: Additions, due out April 6, which is an experiential interpretation of her 2017 critically acclaimed Okovi album released on Sacred Bones Records. The news comes with with the release of ‘Bound’, the first single from the project released via the Adult Swim Singles Program.

Okovi: Additions couples four previously unreleased tracks from the Okovi sessions with four remixes by a diverse cast of artists spanning a spectrum of genres including Johnny Jewel, Katie Gately, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Joanne Pollock (formerly one half of Poemss with Venetian Snares' Aaron Funk). "The songs on Additions traverse a vast amount of sonic ground, but taken together, they cohere remarkably well as an album, all while serving to enrich the experience of Okovi."

"These four new songs were intended to be on Okovi," Nika Roza Danilova explains. "Each of them represents a snapshot of my journey in making the record, and are just as precious to me as the songs that made it onto the final track listing. The remixes are beloved in their own way, as most were born from organic circumstances, and have drawn the original songs into completely new atmospheres."

Okovi: Additions track list:

1. Vacant

2. Bound

3. Pilot Light

4. Bitten Wool

5. Ash to Bone (Johnny Jewel Remix)

6. Siphon (Katie Gately Remix)

7. Exhumed (Randall Dunn and Aaron Weaver [Wolves in the Throne] Remix)

8. Soak (Joanne Pollock Remix)
