Musictown Hits Dublin’s Music Library

Just over a week to go until Cult Called Man and The Motives hit The Music Library, Dublin as part of their Emerging Artists series and the Musictown Festival present for an afternoon of music, song and chat. Both bands will play a 30 minute set and take part in a Q&A with the audience, with compere Marky Edison hosting.

Conceived in a Dublin psychiatric ward in 2012, Cult Called Man have always held an appreciation for the strange side of the human condition. ‘When we play, it's a church. We preach, and people either get on board or get freaked out.' In the wake of 2014's Mr Wednesdae EP recordings, the Cult cloistered themselves within Tyrellstown’s Camelot Studios ,to write and record their debut album, Cult Fiction.

The Motives are an alternative rock band from Wexford that formed in 2001. The members are Geoff Morrison (vocals, guitar), Joe Bernie (drums, vocals), Allan Kinsella (guitar, vocals, harmonica, keyboards) and Dean Redmond (bass, drums) they have been compared to The Divine Comedy, Jonathan Richman, and Talking Heads, difficult to define and get restless slotting into any one genre. The Motives have a singular voice that will appeal to encyclopaedic music nerds and casual listeners equally.

Both acts will then play a set together to close the show, showcasing the festival’s spirit of collaboration. The event will take place in the activity room of the Central Library, ILAC Centre, Henry St, on Saturday April 21 from 2.30 – 4.30 pm

This is an all-ages event. Admission is free and booking is essential.

Goblin Scores Live Horror At Union Chapel & Summerhall

Dawn of the Dead (1978) by George A. Romero and Suspiria (1977) by Dario Argento are among the most famous soundtracks composed and produced by Goblin. The music by Claudio Simonetti’s band is known throughout the world and has a special place in the cult horror film history. This summer, as both films reach their 40th anniversaries and Suspiria receives a reboot, Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin will perform the live scores alongside screenings of these hugely influential movies at two of the UK’s most beautiful venues.

Goblin kicked off their project in the early ‘70s inspired by prog bands like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In early 1975 the band was called in to replace the composer Giorgio Gaslini, who had left the set during the filming of Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) after an argument with the director Dario Argento. They re-wrote most of the score, including the infamous theme. It was an instant and unexpected success with more than a million copies sold and over 52 weeks spent in the Italian charts, ranking no.1 in both the single and LP categories.

Between '75 and '76, Goblin released an instrumental progressive rock album called Roller, and in 1977 Argento called on the band once again to write the soundtrack of Suspiria. In 1978, Goblin recorded another wildly successful soundtrack for the movie Zombi (Dawn of the Dead) directed by George Romero and a concept album about drugs, Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark

In 2013, for the 40th anniversary of Profondo Rosso, Claudio Simonetti decided to reform the band under the name of Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin. The celebrations premiered during the Eutropia Festival in Rome, with a large audience including Dario Argento himself. It was an extraordinary success that allowed Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin to play their music around the world, including sold out shows across the UK, Europe, USA and beyond.
