Album Review: Various - Freerange Records Colour Series: White 06

Simply put, this is Freerange's roundup of the best output on the label over the past 12 months plus a few exclusive tracks.

First up comes Shur-I-kan with the very chilled 'Letting You Down' which unfortunately goes on just slightly too long to avoid getting mentally tuned out into the background. Gorge's 'Kassiende' ups the tempo but at nearly six minutes also rather overstays its welcome and doesn't really seem to be pushing the envelope at all. The first exclusive appears next in the shape of Tony Lionni's 'This Feeling', a much deeper, Detroit number than the previous two tunes and definitely a better track all round. At number four we find Lovebirds' coolly menacing 'The Rat' which must go down a storm in the clubs with its infectious bass and spacey break mid-way through.

Track five is the Solomun remix of Palm Skin Productions' 'Magnetic North'. Not sure if being unaware of the original makes much difference here but despite teasing the listener halfway through this is pretty predictable fare once more. Roberto Rodriguez's 'Be Somebody' takes things a little deeper again and it's quite a robust track that clearly shows why he's got a good amount of DJ support. Pezzner appears at number seven with 'Almost Here Part 2' which retains your interest well with nifty brass samples throughout. Eighth in line is exclusive number two - the tech house of Vincenzo's 'Shonen Jump'. The deepest track so far and one that definitely benefits from a good bass bin in clubs. Sweet melodic touches too.

With the end now in sight we next get Version's remix of Lars Behenroth's 'Ice On The Sun', a good end-of-the-night tune if ever there was one. Tag Team action on the bill next with Langenberg and Manuel Tur joining forces for the funky 'Silk Drive' which pulses along and builds nicely - a strong contender for Best In Show. Brazil's 3Jas take up the slack in 11th place with 'Manomito', a fairly interesting workout. Lastly Rocco provides 'Supernova' to close proceedings in an icily ethereal vein.
