Lila Iké Shows ‘Where I'm Coming From’

Jamaica's magnetic upstart Lila Iké unveils the visual for her new single ‘Where I'm Coming From’. The track has been picking up heat since its debut on June 14via In.Digg.Nation Collective/Easy Star Records. The video, directed by Nickii Kane, brings to life the fiery fervor heard in Lila's versatile flow and in the rugged trap-inspired beat produced by Kasadie "Caspa" Jones.

From her first home in Kingston to her hometown in the countryside of Manchester, Lila takes the viewers on a vibrant walk through her stomping grounds in Jamaica, with friends and family along the way. Later, her crew – which includes a star-studded cast like dancehall artist Chi Ching Ching and Grammy-nominated reggae singer Protoje – turns the streets into a lively party.

“The song and music video for 'Where I'm Coming From' means a lot to me. I finally had an opportunity to summarize my story thus far and involve the people who have been, and still are, a part of my journey. The video starts with a scene in Kingston, in the bedroom that I actually lived in when I first moved to the capital. It then follows me as I take a road trip back to my hometown in Christiana, Manchester (Jamaica). I'm greeted by all my family and friends, a sort of homecoming vibes. The reception was overwhelming! It was a whole vibe! I’m excited to share my journey and my people with the world,” a humble Lila Iké explains.

Lower Dens Share ‘I Drive’

Four years since their critically acclaimed album, Escape From Evil, Lower Dens recently announced their newest creation - The Competition - which will be released on Ribbon Music on September 6.  Now they share the video for the second single from the album, I Drive, directed by Jason Nocito, featuring choreography by Veleda Roehl and dancers Stephannie Henriquez & Steven Jeltschhe. I Drivefollows on the heels - in both sequence and theme - of the album’s lead single ‘Young Republicans, about a certain sect of society's elite. On I Drive’, Jana Hunter sings inquisitively “We had streets/But now there’s just police/I drive at night.

The Competition is a pop album with a concept both emotionally and politically urgent. By design, competition is the driving force of modern capitalism, and the title is lead singer and songwriter Jana Hunter’s term for a socio-psychological phenomenon this generates, a kind of psychosis that accelerates our insecurities and anxieties to the point of total overload, corroding our intimacies, our communities, and our senses of self.

Hunter says, “The issues that have shaped my life, for better or for worse, have to do with coming from a family and a culture that totally bought into this competitive mindset.  I was wild and in a lot of pain as a kid; home life was very bleak, and pop songs were a guaranteed escape to a mental space where beauty, wonder, and love were possible.  I wanted to write songs that might have the potential to do that.”
