People Club Announce New EP

Berlin-based indie soul five-piece People Club have just announced their new EP, Kil Scott, is set for release November 15. The band are sharing their first single from the record ‘Perfume’ online now. Speaking about the track, the band said "The initial idea for this song was brought in by our guitarist Saxon, who, like so many, struggled to cope with the divorce of his parents during his childhood.  ‘Perfume’ is a deeply personal contemplation of these experiences, told from the perspective of an anguished lover seeking affection from her partner.  Despite her efforts, she receives no love but remains dedicated, but heartbroken forever."

People Club is made up of Sarah Martin (lead vocals), Ray Sonder (bass, backing vocals), Saxon Gable (guitar, backing vocals), Pete Costello (keyboards, backing vocals) & Drew Deal (drums). The band formed in 2018 after they all moved to Berlin at roughly the same time in late 2017 from their respective countries (Australia, USA, UK, New Zealand). None of them knew each other previously apart from Saxon and Ray, the five met via their online adverts, instantly felt a vibe and formed People Club.

Singing about issues like sexism, racism, homophobia, the band's distinctive aesthetic blends lyrical social commentary with a classic soul ensemble with a generous helping of lavish effects and synthesisers. Their new EP is based on destroying a fictional character called Scott and his unsavoury ways. He functions as a caricature of male toxicity if you will - an amalgamation of their stereotypical masculine traits which shouldn’t have a place in contemporary society.

With this record, the band wanted to capture the raw feel of the songs - true to the sound of them playing them at their shows or rehearsals so they recorded the EP live - all in the same room, playing at the same time. Regulars on the Berlin indie circuit for the last six months, as well as performing dates in Dublin and London, they are fast becoming crowd favourites known for their high-energy shows and will be touring again later this year.

K.Flay Is Not In California

Night Street/Interscope Records alt-pop artist K.Flay has released the video for ‘Not In California’. Directed by Clara Aranovich, the video comes as the United Nations Climate Action Summit takes place in New York City, and addresses “our collective inaction on climate change, and the sense of disbelief that I think so many of us feel. We're looking out at a world that is getting hotter and scarier by the day, and still nothing seems to compel the government to take action. The video imagines a trash universe in which social isolation and littering and bad policing are the status quo -- a universe that doesn't feel so different from ours now.”

‘Not In California’ showcases K.Flay’s ability to deliver razor-sharp, brutally honest lyrics and spitfire rhymes. “The babies all cry as the scientists try/ but the politicians keep on screaming/ I’d like a road map/ like to turn the clock back/ but the internet it keeps on freezing” she sings.

‘Not In California’ is from her third full-length album Solutions, which came out earlier this year. It’s the third to be released from the album, yet narratively it serves as the prequel to ‘Bad Vibes’, revealing how and why she was captured, with ‘Sister’ being the closing chapter, where our heroine escapes captivity with her female companion, only to find themselves in a world where everyone is moving backwards.

K.Flay is currently in the midst of The Solutions Tour, which kicked off earlier this month. Following a 19-city run in North America, she’ll venture to the UK performing in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and London before heading off across Europe.
