Lucy Dacus’ Punk Cover Of ‘Last Christmas’

Ringing in the festive season, Lucy Dacus has released a cover of Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’. Following the release of acclaimed holiday-themed singles ‘La Vie En Rose’, ‘My Mother & I’, ‘Forever Half Mast’, ‘Dancing In The Dark’, and ‘In The Air Tonight’ throughout the year, ‘Last Christmas’ is the sixth installment taken from Dacus’ 2019 EP that is out November 8 on Matador Records. The EP will also feature a yet unreleased original tribute to New Year’s titled ‘Fools Gold’. A special bundle set of the 2019 EP and a limited edition, clear vinyl pressing of Dacus’s breakthrough 2018 album Historian will be available through the Matador Records webstore.

Sped-up, amped-up and delivered through a megaphone to chugging abandon, Dacus’ reworking imbues the jumper-sporting classic with a spontaneous energy that turns it playfully on its head. “I don't really like Christmas,” says Dacus. “In the studio, we listened to the original of ‘Last Christmas’ and didn't talk about an arrangement. I just told everyone to play it angry. This is what happened first take. It actually came out pretty fun, maybe a tad psychotic.”

Following the release of her universally acclaimed second album Historian and revered collaborative project boygenius with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers, 2019 has seen Dacus tour across Australia, Europe and North America, receive continuous support across BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, grace the stages of festivals including Primavera, Best Kept Secret and Hopscotch and make her Austin City Limits debut. She has recently penned op-eds for the New York Times and Vanity Fair, and expounded on the unique approach of the 2019 song series in a recent interview with Spotify For Artists.

Pillow Queens Debut Album Coming Soon

Dublin band Pillow Queens have premiered a brand new single. The track, entitled 'Brothers', was described as "open-hearted and unafraid to say it as it is". It begins the countdown toward their much anticipated 2020 debut album. The band say the track itself is about cherishing and loving the wonderful men in your life.

They explain further, "the lyrics in the verses show quick snapshots of the aftermath from a loss of a friend within a very tight knit group. An element of fear runs through the song as this sudden death makes you look around your group and feel terrified of the chances of another."

It touches on a shared grief which drives you to hold dear the memories and moments you have with each other. While this song can be considered one about mourning, it’s ultimately about the intense love you have for your chosen family.

The track was recorded in Attica Studios, Co. Donegal with producer Tommy McLaughlin. It’s also been released alongside a beautifully cinematic video made with regular collaborator, director Kate Dolan.

After a triumphant run of UK dates in October, including a sell-out show at London's Shacklewell Arms, the band now travel to play LA’s School Night club and then on to Iceland Airwaves festival in Reykjavik.

See Pillow Queens live:

November 1st - PUCA Festival, Ireland
