Los Bengala - Incluso Festivos

  • Published in Albums

Easy tiger. It looks like they not only have a tiger in their tanks, but also in their pants ;)

In the short time that this band have been together, around 18 months or so, they have recorded this their debut LP.

Found in a London dive bar, and then going on to play a sold out Dirty Water Club a few months later, they went down a storm. This Spanish duo consist of Guillermo Sinnerman (guitar and vox) and Borja Téllez (drums and vox).

There is a very strong Latino flavour running throughout the LP, tracks that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Tarantino movie. Its wild, it’s primitive, and recorded with a live sound.

Taking a quote from the press release “If we stop we’re dead – and we very much like being alive. Life is short and we intend to make the most of it. We never stop playing. We’re a live band. With sweat and intensity. And the record you’ll soon be holding in your hand will show that.” I love that sentiment; that, and the LP cover – a pair or ripped tiger pants hanging on the washing line, it kinda says it all. I just knew that I was going to love this record.

The opening track has a primitive hypnotic beat, and lays down the gauntlet for the rest of the LP. I'm full of anticipation at what will follow.

We are treated to tracks like 'Aaah' – a ferocious mentalist fuzz attack. 'Atoco' – pure garage punk, and 'Perfect Body' – a Bluesy Punk Latino hybrid, with pounding drums.

There is something quite gritty about the Latino numbers, they’re so manly I can almost smell the pheromones. I get the impression that they aren't simply just singing and playing, it's their whole being that's involved - blood, sweat and guts, and they are right here on this LP. and it hits all the right spots. I feel quite ravaged by the end of it, and need a lie down!

My recommendation is, go and buy it. I’ve heard that their live shows are phenomenal, and really hope to catch the boys playing in the UK this year.

14 tracks, 28 mins. In the words of the late, great Lemmy Kilmister “That’s the way I like it baby, I don’t want to live forever”…

Incluso Festivos is available now from amazon & iTunes.

Harry Violet & The Sharks - Jungle Cavalcade b/w Dance At The Korova

  • Published in Singles

This is the fabulous debut 45 from Harry Violet & The Sharks, a dark sax-driven rock & roll 4-piece from London. Most impressively recorded, produced, and pressed by the band themselves. They are "intent on mixing dive-bar jive and 12-bar rhythms with nightmarish grooves".

Citing their influences as The Cramps, The Lounge Lizards, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits and "the eccentricities of Joe Meek productions" and "inspired by the wild and wacky adventures of Frank Buck and the dystopian youth madness of A Clockwork Orange". Enough already, we get the picture. You are preaching to the converted.

'Jungle Cavalcade' is a low down dirty hip shakin’ stroller. I can picture all of the curvaceous leopard-print clad Betty Page-a-likes nonchalantly flipping their ponytails and giving the hot rockabilly dude the eye; a lucky strike hanging seductively from his mouth. Shake and shiver people, shake and shiver …

Flipside 'Dance At The Korova', is a tale of working hard and letting loose. Madly jiving it’s way across the dancefloor. I’ll have a moloko plus with that please.

Two original numbers, and racking up less than five minutes in total - oh how you tease!! A great first single. Hope to catch the boys live soon.

Jungle Cavalcade is available now from Dirty Water Records.
