Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - Howling At Nothing EP

  • Published in Singles

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have released an EP that sounds straight out of the 1950s or ‘60s with reminisce of the classic ‘50s and ’60s music-based films like Dirty Dancing and Grease it transports the listener to that time. Which ironically has made it something new and exciting to the music scene, it gives the vintage feel without being old.

It has a folky sound, which has become increasingly popular over the years with the old rocky feel (strongest in ‘What I Need’), creating a perfect blend of old and new, keeping things interesting and engaging.

‘S.O.B.’ has a slightly more pop feel to it due it being more upbeat with its extremely catchy, tongue in cheek lyrics, and infectiously happy tune. However, it’s more Christina Aguilera’s ‘Candyman’ than One Direction, so it still fits in with the modern throwback style they have perfected.

The final track ‘How To Make Friends’ is slower and more soulful, with heartfelt lyrics such as “Everyone knows you but nobody’s gonna want you” giving it a bitter kick contrasting the soothing tune.

Overall, this EP is pure brilliance. It’s simultaneously new and old, folk and rock, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats has perfected the modern throwback style so many artists are striving for nowadays.

Howling At Nothing EP is available from iTunes and Amazon.
