Why? - Sod In The Seed EP

  • Written by  Kenneth McMurtrie

Having previously enjoyed Why?’s psych-tinged output I was a bit surprised to see the press release accompanying this offering describe the band as “Californian Hip Hop cult icons”. To further complicate matters they’re soon after referred to as hailing from Cinncinati which last time I checked ain’t in Cali. What the hell’s going on? Only one way to find out…

Sod In The Seed's title track bears out the rap part of the official blurb anyway as they set about their task in an MC Lars meets They Might Be Giants pop/rap hybrid that works pretty well as it rhymes off various aspects of modern living. It’s pretty catchy and grows more pleasing with each listen. ‘For Someone’ follows up with a dream-like, African rhythm tinged slice of spacey pop. Third track, ‘The Plan’, slows the pace right down to a Lounge act groove and otherwise doesn’t really make any sort of impact.

The second half of the set starts off with another mid-paced number called ‘Probable Cause’ which is so short you’ll barely notice it. ‘Twenty Seven’ is a practically comatose tune and yet again of no great length whilst final song ‘Shag Carpet’ revisits the same territory as covered in the very first track, albeit much more laidback in the process (and again over not much length). All in then not an earth shaking release but we can always hope that upcoming album Mumps delivers more.
