Magana Reveals Multimedia Dreams

There is a space between fully asleep and fully awake that I want to explore. This is represented in some of the ambient tracks, which I think of largely as that space between being awake and falling asleep, while the dreams more represent the transition between being asleep and waking up. This mental dusk is beautiful, and deserves its own exploration.” – Jeni Magaña (October 2024)

The new project from Magana aka Jeni Magaña, who has spent the last few years touring with Mitski (she also recently played on the ‘Coyote, My Little Brother’ / ‘Buffalo Replaced’ single) and Lady Lamb, while also recording as one-half the Pen Pin pop duo.

Released via the UK’s Hand Drawn Hand label, Dreams is an experimental record which combines ambient instrumentals with spoken-word recollections of her own dreams, and the physical edition of Dreams is accompanied by a book of Magaña’s photography. The project follows up March’s critically acclaimed Teeth LP.  While that return album album boasted a “Witchy Rock” sound that combined Acid Folk, Synth Pop, and Indie Rock, her new project is something quite different.

Dreams is a peaceful stroll through the inner workings of our minds at sleep. It is a collection of Jeni Magaña's dreams, recorded upon waking over a period of six months, and then set to music. Each dream is woven in between ambient instrumentals related to the various stages of sleep. It is recommended to listen to Dreams out in the world with headphones that are not noise cancelling, so that the ambient sounds of the world around you are able to blend with the sounds of the record. The album was released as a limited-edition cassette by the UK-based Hand Drawn Hand experimental record label, and it’s accompanied by an A5 book of Magaña's photography.

Max Blansjaar finds False Comforts

False Comforts, the Katie Von Schleicher-produced debut LP from 21-year-old Max Blansjaar is out today. Blansjaar was born in Amsterdam, raised in Oxford and recorded this début album in Brooklyn, New York. He first appeared on the Oxford scene in 2018, aged 15, promoting shows in all-ages venues and performing his playfully sincere lo-fi indie pop songs and releasing his early EPs through the Beanie Tapes label.

For his debut, the 21-year-old spent two weeks recording at Katie Von Schleicher’s home studio in Prospect Park. Here, Von Schleicher and Nate Mendelsohn helped to expand the sonic horizons of Max’s elaborate and intricate demos. The result of the sessions is ten songs that feel somehow grounded in Brooklyn, Oxford, Amsterdam, or somewhere in between.

Max will be touring across England in the summer.
