Morgan Heritage – Strictly Roots

  • Written by  Rob Crozier

As we apparently approach a heatwave in the UK, there is probably no better time to immerse your ears in some new reggae sounds. Luckily for us there is a new release from Morgan Heritage. The five piece family band is fondly known as The Royal Family Of Reggae.

Their new album Strictly Roots is a collection of roots reggae merged with dancehall, and brings a whole host of Jamaican artists to this family gathering. This album is already something special as it currently sits as the number one reggae album in the US. Alongside this is the fact that it is released on the band’s new independent label, CTBC.

In this offering we get thirteen tracks and the tone is set by the opening track ‘Strictly Roots’, a straight up confirmation of what this band is about, roots lyrics with sunshine basslines and an all-round feel good factor. The band pride themselves on their concisions approach to music, something which is a theme throughout their career, and this album is no different.

‘Child of JAH’ features the first collaboration on the album, with rising star Chronixx invited into the family to provide even more energy, and he does not disappoint. The partnerships don’t let up with BBC 1Xtra’s Seani B, who is on hand to co-produce the album’s lead single ‘Perform and Done’. The track has already seen great reviews from the US and Seani B’s connection in the BBC has obviously seen the single get plenty of airplay.

Make no mistake that this is a serious, straight up, conscious roots reggae album. Tracks such as ‘Perform and Done’ alongside ‘So Amazing’, which features a host of artists, are lively modern reggae numbers. Reggae has always tread a fine line between conscious roots reggae and pop summer fun. It is often mistaken as disposable pop, yet these tracks attempt to carry a serious message whilst entertaining, without ramming the message down our ears.

However, Morgan Heritage have always backed up their studio albums with strong live performances. Unwilling to simply tour and rest on their laurels, the band’s passion lies more in creating cultural understanding and raising awareness to causes close to their heart. This is illustrated by their recent tour, which saw them partner with Oxfam America in working to alleviate hunger and injustice.

This album attempts to raise awareness, as well as entertain. Reggae music has always had a deep conscious side to it, and Morgan Heritage have continued that fine tradition. It won’t be to everyone’s taste or ears, but to those that do indulge will not be disappointed.

Strictly Roots is available from Amazon and iTunes.
